PROJECTS Here are some of the projects we are working on: FILM AND DISCUSSION OUTREACH Generate community awareness of the importance of biodiversity by showing films on topics related to food and environmental issues.  Immediately after the films, guide audience based discussions of the film.  Provide free information on how simply and inexpensively to begin to grow some of your own food at home. HOME GARDENING OUTREACH Proposal for Food Gardening, Harvesting and Cooking Instruction for Seniors at a City Multiservice Center In low income areas with limited access to fresh food:  Initiate 'mirror'  gardening at city multiservice centers.  Provide  low maintenance , high yield  food  plants to  grow at the centers and for the participants to take home .   Demonstrate  plant  maintenance, harvesting, cooking, and propagating at the center.  These skills are then mirrored  by the participants at their homes. These methods are being developed to be accessible to low income, senior participants, as well as the general population. Prototype for a Small, Low Cost, Quick Start, Home Food Garden A test garden that attempts to maximize food production with minimum water and materials. These goals will be achieved by predominantly planting 'cut and come again' greens and herbs appropriate to each half of the year and by the use of  a high proportion of organic matter in, and on the garden beds. Simple and inexpensive methods for growing some of your own food at your home. More....... FUTURE PLANS: LEGISLATIVE CHANGE Work for requirements that all new multifamily housing projects have 70% of their plantings be food plants and trees, and provide places for residents to grow food and compost kitchen waste. Work to get city ordinances that require city plantings to include fruit trees. Work to get more lenient city ordinances related to urban chicken raising.
